| At the risk of appearing to be a stalker.... |

I just sent this email to John Linnell (of They Might Be Giants), via his MySpace page:
------------------------------------------------------------ Mr. Linnell,
My name is Jay Linnell - named Jay for my parents' old friend John Jackson, Jr., whom they knew affectionately as "JJ". Though my name is a diminutive, I too am John Linnell, and I've long been amused to share a name with a famous fella whose music I've enjoyed since childhood.
Until now, I've never had a chance to attend one of your shows live, but this Tuesday in Minneapolis, I'm taking my wife to your show at First Avenue. She's something of a TMBG fan, but for your comfort and mine let's assume that has nothing to do with her marrying a fella named Jay Linnell. :)
Anyhow, I have a truly silly request which I'm nearly certain you'll chuckle at but deny with grace.
To amuse my wife on her birthday, I would be SO VERY HAPPY if I could join you onstage for two minutes of your time to share with you a rendition of "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt." As a fan with the same name, I'd be tickled, but I'd also have the chance to give my wife a great laugh for her birthday.
If you get a chance to read this before Tuesday, I welcome your response. And I promise I'll be gracious if you have to say "Isn't that sweet, but no, please stay in the crowd."
Looking forward to the show, J Linnell |

So today I talked with my union rep. Coworker's a union steward herself, and I've been active with her in the union. He's a good third party who's friendly to both of us and really level-headed about workplace issues.
I asked Coworker to sit down with me in the Prayer & Meditation room at the Office of Multicultural Services so I can explain to her why the conversation she had with me yesterday put me in an uncomfortable space. My hope is twofold: To ensure she clearly understands /my/ boundaries, and to remind her of workplace discrimination and harassment standards so she doesn't surprise herself by doing this with another worker and finding her job in danger.
She was surprised I hadn't left the conversation with the same comfortable feeling of mutual resolution as she had. But I suppose that's part of what I'm hoping to talk about. |

So today a coworker took me aside and had a 20-minute conversation on company time about how worried she is about my soul because I'm a polytheist.
Shake your boots and walk on, ma'am. |

I return to work Monday. Dawn's too doped up on Oxycontin to take care of our child safely during the week. We THOUGHT we had arranged for a friend's teenage daughter to come spend the days with Dawn and daughter for a week - but she called us today to tell us she has a job interview Monday and might start a job Tuesday.
So.
I have exhausted my leave time at work, and I have NOTHING to pay anybody.
Any ideas? I'm really scared right now of a choice between my daughter's safety and the income to feed us. |

So we harvested our corn - late, I know.
Got about half a bushel, once I shucked it all and trimmed away parts with no kernels. Lots of the ears are a lot shorter than I expected. That's part of why I'd harvested it so late; The short cobs made the ears look quite thin, as if they hadn't developed yet. I do still have one row - the northernmost - which is still a bit immature; I'll try it in a week, once it's had its greedy share of sun and water.
So here I have a gallon-sized bag of red corn, and two gallon-sized bags of yellow corn, still on the cob. That'll be a staple for a little while here. :)
And now I get to chat with Boy about the experience of preparing the dirt, planting, weeding, harvesting, shucking, cooking and eating. Hurray! |

I have the following books that need homes. Anything listed as "like new" is overstock from a recently-departed bookstore, and is listed at 1/2 cover price. Anything else is a guess at reasonable price. Really - make me an offer.
OR, I'm happy to trade any RPG book for another RPG book, or a stack for a stack.
First though, I have a few choose-your-own books for which I hope to find a 10-12-y.o. who might enjoy them for free:
- Choose Your Own Adventure #14: Case of the Silk King (Chooseco)
- Combat Command in the World of Piers Anthony: Bio of a Space Tyrant (Ace) - this one involves some amount of complicated game-play.
- Endless Quest (Top Secret spies): Robbers and Robots (TSR)
- Give Yourself Goosebumps #7: Under the Magician's Spell (Scholastic)
- Give Yourself Goosebumps #1: Escape from the Carnival of Terrors (Scholastic)

Today's lunch:
Pumpkin from my garden Cucumber from my garden Baby potatoes from my garden Green beans from my garden Basil from my garden Sage from my garden Garlic greens from my garden
All chopped up and stir-fried together in some corn oil and a hint of brown sugar.
This is yummy.
----------- edit: I should say "our garden". Boy has done a /lot/ of work for this garden and I shouldn't slight that. |

I will be largely unavailable by internet through this coming Wednesday. My laptop is in the shop, my desktop computer has given up the ghost, and my workplace has fairly strict limits to our use of the internet.
If you must reach me, try me at my home or cell phone. |

Well I'm at home with the kids. Boy had terrible crampy gas that was mistaken for flu symptoms.
Dawn will be out of the hospital at 10 tomorrow. We're going to get in touch with folks from my church who'd offered a bed for her to sleep on in the living room... |

Girl was up at four with much yelling and biting today. I'm really sad and scared for her. When she was /two/ she would tell me that kitties said meow and pirates said ARR! Two years later she just yells and yells and rarely speaks a word. I've seen such regression in her verbal skills and it /scares/ me.
But I'm also afraid I'm projecting my stress onto her right now, just as she's expressing hers in tantrums. I'll be going to Dawn's hospital room midday and until they either send her home or don't. Dawn seemed in really good shape when I left her last night, but I do worry. It's what I do.
In any case, I have to pick up Girl by five tonight... oi. |

So Dawn lived through surgery.
We're in her room, mom, Dawn, and I. Dawn's in good spirits, though all clues say her tongue is made of bubblegum or some other flexible material unconnected to her nervous system.
Sadly I can't hang around too long, as I have to leave in 20-30 minutes to rescue Girl's caretaker for the evening, and check in with Boy to talk about his first day of high school. But I'll be back tomorrow.
We have a little jar with a dime-sized piece of disc in it. It's not the prettiest thing I've ever seen. |

They're finishing up surgery. I'm in a new waiting room right now, waiting for the surgeon to come out and chat with me before I see her.
Special sort of nervous, right now. |

[Sep. 7th, 2009|06:29 pm] |
Dawn's surgery is at 7:30 tomorrow morning. Prayers, magic, love, and supportive thoughts are definitely welcomed. Feel free to focus on me as a reservoir for support and energy, as I will be with or near her all day.
She's anxious, as you might guess. Comfort, strength, and health are her basic needs just now. |

Speck has decided that the way daddy pees in the potty is far more interesting (or maybe easier for her to understand visually) than the way mommy pees in the potty.
So she won't sit to pee. She has learned to stand on top of the toilet seat and squat just a bit over the bowl to aim.
But she's doing it. And tha tkicks ass. |

[Aug. 18th, 2009|08:19 am] |
I have to be back at work tomorrow or Thursday. And I /really/ don't know that Dawn is prepared to take care of herself, let alone Claire. To compound things, Dawn was antsy, so in the middle of the night she went grocery shopping, and set herself back about a week of recovery.
Damn it.
Even more pressing now, I have two days to find adequate daycare for Girl. |

Day 8 away from work.
I really hate this. Not that I hate spending time with my family - I'm just having stupid masculine worthless feelings without my pay job every day.
And I'm terribly worried about Dawn, still. I'm anxious about even returning to work after this week. Feh. |

Fred Rogers truly is among my spiritual role-models. He lived as Francis of Assisi instructed: Preach every day; Use words only when necessary. |
